Augustus is a strong candidate for the first Roman king in Daniel's fourth-kingdom context. Daniel says God would establish His kingdom "in the days of these kings." Dan 2:44, When we look to the New Testament for the first Roman ruler actually mentioned by name, Caesar Augustus appears first (Luke 2:1). He was Rome's first emperor and ruled when Jesus was born. This creates a significant chronological connection: Rome was the fourth kingdom, Augustus is its first explicitly named emperor in the New Testament, and Christ entered the world during his reign. Therefore, Augustus provides a natural starting point for identifying the kings Daniel says would be present when God established His kingdom.
